Background

Editing text in a PDF without Adobe Acrobat is entirely possible, directly in your browser, for free. Most people assume you need expensive software just to fix a typo or update a label, but that is not the case. The Edit PDF tool gives you a canvas where every text block on the page is selectable, editable, and adjustable without any installs or sign-up.

There are two ways to work with text in a PDF: editing an existing text block directly, or placing a new text box on the page. Both are covered below.

Quick summary:
  • To edit existing text, open Edit PDF, click any text block on the canvas and type
  • To add new text, use the Text tool to place a text box anywhere on the page
  • Everything runs locally in your browser, no file uploads, no account required

Edit text

To edit an existing text block, click on it. A cursor appears inside the block and you can type, delete, or reformat content just like you would in a text editor. Likewise, the right-side object inspector panel lets you adjust all available properties for the text object like font, color, size, rotation and more.

You can also use the right panel action buttons like the duplicate or delete buttons to quickly make a copy of the image or remove it from the page. Or the layer buttons to move it forward or backward in the layer stack if you have overlapping objects.

Some text have their font embedded in the PDF, these fonts will have an (Embedded) label next to them in the font family dropdown. It's important to know that embedded fonts contain only a subset of characters that is actually used in the document. This ensures the PDF size is optimized and only stores the necessary characters but can result in missing characters if you try to type something not included in the embedded font. For the best editing experience, we recommend using the supported fonts in the dropdown.

Add text

To add a new text block to the page, select the Text tool from the toolbar content dropdown and click the confirm button to render the text object on the page. You can type your content, stylize it, then reposition or modify it as you would with editing any other text block.

It's that simple! Once you are done, click Preview or Download to save your updated PDF. No watermark is added and no account is required.

Tips

  • Covering old text: If you need to replace text that is not editable (vector-created), either delete it or add a white vector rectangle over it first, then place your new text box on top to avoid overlap.
  • Embedded fonts: Some PDFs have embedded fonts that only include the specific characters used in the document. If you try to type a character that isn't included in the embedded font, the app will fallback to a default supported font like Helvetica. For the best editing experience, we recommend using the supported fonts in the dropdown.
  • Password-protected PDF? You will need the document password to open and edit it. The editor will prompt you when you upload the file.
